What is art glass overlay?

Sometimes referred to as decorative film, designer glass, or simply overlay, this is a revolutionary process that lays cut pieces of adhesive backed colored or textured laminate, adhesive backed lead, bevels and jewels onto a solid piece of glass (or windows, side-lights, mirrors, cabinet doors, shower enclosures, ceiling panels) according to a pre-drawn pattern, to create stunning stained glass replicas.

How is it different from traditional stained glass?

Unlike traditional stained glass or traditional stained glass overlay (the gluing or melding of cut pieces of glass to a solid piece of glass), this is a relatively uncomplicated technique that uses adhesive backed decorative film or laminate, and adhesive backed safe coated lead placed on a solid glass surface.  However, the technique and products we use create pieces that look and feel like traditional stained glass at much more competitive prices.

How does art glass overlay pay for itself?

Is it just for windows?

Overlay stained glass is so versatile, you may install it on existing windows, mirrors, sidelights, transoms, cabinet doors, glass room dividers, ceiling panels and shower enclosures, as well as making beautiful decorative glass pieces to hang or give as gifts.

Is it durable and easy to keep clean?

Our film, applied according to our professional technique and training, has a guarantee of ten years on exposed locations (but time has proven that our laminate typically lasts 20 years or more in these exposed areas). Interior applications have life long duration with no problems.  Easy to clean, you simply wipe off with a cloth dampened with water or window cleaners.

What are the benefits of art glass overlay?

We think beauty and privacy are wonderful in themselves, but this product is lightweight, seamless, air tight, water tight, and contains ultraviolet inhibitors that protect your furniture, floors and walls from fading.  It also inhibits heat and cold transfer by 15%.   When properly built and installed, finished pieces meet building codes for safety glass and require little maintenance. Because it is built on solid glass, sizes are unlimited, and installation does not require dual and triple glazing or bars.  Talk about practical!

Do you handle installation?

Art Glass Overlay always uses a professional window installer to install finished pieces in order to guarantee all safety codes and proper sealing and fitting requirements are met. However, some applications (I.e. shower enclosures, certain windows, etc.) will be custom created on-site by an AGO professionally trained artist.

Can you do custom designed overlay for out-of-state customers?

Absolutely!  Depending on the size and application of the job, an Art Glass Overlay professional will either physically come to the job location, or if more practical, communicate via telephone and the inter-net to design whatever our customer needs and work with a local installer for measurements and installation.  Because our overlay designs are applied to solid tempered glass, pieces can be easily shipped and installed anywhere.

Is art glass overlay expensive?

Art Glass Overlay is extremely competitive as we strive to keep overhead costs lean so we may pass the savings on to our customers.  Stained glass overlay is typically more economical than traditional stained glass and even more savings are achieved because the structural support needed for most traditional stained glass is not necessary and installation is uncomplicated. Add to that the savings from the UV and hot/cold inhibitors inherent in the laminate, as well as the value added to your home when you purchase decorative glass, many pieces will pay for themselves over a few years.
